Winter
Alpine freedom!
This is winter at the Grossglockner
Sun, snow and skiing pleasure
Our winter on the Grossglockner is unique. Unique because the giant is the highest mountain in Austria with 3,798 meters. And even our Almchalet Goldbergleiten, at 1,300 m above sea level and around 300 meters above the upper Mölltal, is already on the high-mountain level.
Unique because our ski slopes really start from the 2,000-meter limit only. Where most of the other ski areas stop. This guarantees you skiing on wide, sunny, kilometers-long natural snow slopes, and absolute snow security until spring. His majesty of the Grossglockner watches you all day ...
Unique because we are on the south side of the Alps. The sun always shines a little bit longer, the mild flair of the "Dolce Vita" is in the air. And because we are "at the end of the world" in winter, there are hardly any day guests and no crowds on the lifts. Heiligenblut is an absolute insider tip, even in the high season.
Freeriding, high alpine ski tours - your freedom off-slopes!
1,400 hectares of official freerider areas in the Heiligenblut-Grossglockner ski area, unlimited, breathtaking ski tours on the 3,000-summits of the mystical, practically deserted Schobergruppe and in the Goldberg massif, both right on our doorstep. This awaits you as an off-slopes fan, variant driver and ski tourers on a winter vacation. The great thing: You can easily reach the Freerider-Area Heiligenblut with the mountain railway and the lifts, without an exhausting ascent.
As a ski tourer, you will find everything your heart desires: from the simple but scenic entry-level tour to professional excursions in the highest level of experience and difficulty. In our hut library we have all the relevant touring books in stock, especially for the southern High Tauern. As an official partner of the Hohe Tauern National Park, we know a lot of tours ourselves, and can also use the professional know-how of the National Park rangers at any time, if you have a question. We are also happy to organize the off-road vehicle transfer to the entry point at a fair special price, if desired.
And if you have never done riding off-slopes: an introductory course with our ski school and our mountain guides. What has been in our blood since childhood can be a delicate adventure for many ski fans from the lowlands. But don't worry: A professional introductory course with experienced ski guides from the region shows you how to do, what you have to look out for and what is important for a ski tour. You can also borrow the equipment for the first time in the sports shop in the valley. But be careful: after that you could be infected by the "Alpine Hochtour-Virus" ...
Heiligenblut-Grossglockner and Mölltaler Glacier - our two top ski areas
55 classy kilometers of slopes in the high alpine area, that is our ski area Heiligenblut-Großglockner "The Top of Austria". On the three ski mountains Schareck, Viehbühel around Hochfleiss you will find sunny, snow-safe downhill pleasure up to almost 3,000 meters above sea level. All systems are fully in operation again in the 2024/25 ski season, and numerous huts invite you for drinks, snacks and lunch, from family-style to the trendy aprés-ski locations. You do not need to fear overcrowded slopes, since the Grossglockner Pass is closed in winter and therefore day guests can hardly come here. Our webcams show you what it looks like on the slopes.
Our ski region is a high mountain ski area. Nevertheless, a beautiful valley descent to Heiligenblut is possible, even in the late winter. From there you can comfortably come to our village of Sagritz with the free ski bus, where there are only about 15 minutes walk to the chalet. You don't need to carry your skies, as for our guests we have a free ski-safe for ski and shoes in the valley station of the Rossbach Gondola. By car it also takes about 15 minutes from us to Heiligenblut, and near the valley station is a large parking garage with sufficient free parking spaces.
The glacier ski area "Mölltaler Gletscher" is only 10 kilometers as the crow flies from our chalet. The slopes there rise to well over 3,000 meters, and skiing usually starts at the beginning of October and runs until June. That's why the 17 km of high alpine downhill runs are used every year by the best skiers in the world to prepare for the winter sports season. The Mölltaler Gletscher is the official training area of the Austria Ski Team and the German Alpine Ski National Team.
But even for walkers, the ride up on the glacier cable car to the Eissee panoramic restaurant at 2,800 m above sea level is worthwhile. There, on the large, sunny southwest terrace, you can enjoy a sensational view of the ice giants of the Hohe Tauern National Park and, in good weather, a view of up to 150 kilometers of the South Tyrolean Dolomites. By car, you can reach the valley station of the cable car in around 40 minutes from us. Those who are really sporty can even get there on touring skis, via the Kleinzirknitz-Scharte.
Slow Winter - relaxation for body and soul
You've never had a winter holiday in the mountains? Then come to us and let yourself be enchanted by crystal-clear mountain air, glittering snow, bright sunshine and the cozy romance of an old mountain house! Whether gentle winter sports such as cross-country skiing or snowshoe hiking, a winter walk with a fantastic mountain view or simply relaxing and enjoying our legendary fondue in the farmhouse parlor in the evening - this will inspire you and give you pleasure and relaxation. Our gondolas take you comfortably to the summit regions, even as a pedestrian, where perfectly groomed winter hiking trails and rustic huts await you for a stop.
With us you will experience a winter without the gloomy fog of the lowlands or the smog of the big cities. There is no industry here anywhere near, our Upper Möll Valley is a dead end in winter with hardly any car traffic and, due to its altitude of over 1,000 m, is largely fog-free even in the valley floor. Our Almchalet Goldbergleiten, located on a hillside with great views on the south side of the main Alpine ridge, receives 5 hours of direct sunshine even on the winter solstice on December 21st. Thanks to the altitude and the clear, pollutant-free air, the sun and UV radiation are so intense here that you can sunbathe in a deckchair on our mountain terrace at midday even in midwinter.
Experience the adventure of snowshoe hiking and the mountain winter in a very original way! Hiking with snowshoes takes you on untouched, rarely used paths, where you are alone with nature and the landscape of our mountains. You don't need any special training or athletic skills to go snowshoe hiking. Anyone who can walk can hike with snowshoes. You don't need to buy or rent expensive equipment either.
As a guest at our Almchalet, we will provide you with professional-quality snowshoes and poles free of charge for the duration of your vacation. And you'll get an introduction to the basics of this gentle winter sport for free.
The ultimate nature experience: guided snowshoe excursions with a national park ranger. No one knows our mountains and explains the beauty of nature better than the full-time rangers of the Hohe Tauern National Park. In the winter season there are guided tours with the rangers in our mountains every week, from easy tours for beginners to night hikes to watching ibexes, the kings of our alpine wildlife. These are holiday experiences that make winter holidays something special! For you as our house guest, these tours are free of charge, because our Almchalet Goldbergleiten is an official national park partner! You can find the complete program and all dates here.
At our mountain house, your children can enjoy a carefree winter. Romping around in the snow, building an igloo or snowman in the hut garden, snowball fights, everything is possible! Thanks to our secluded location, there is no more car traffic. Next to the Almchalet there is only the winter hiking trail into the valley, and, for those who like adventure, up to the 2,604 m high peak of the Mohar. Here you can play and romp around safely, and finally there's time for the children again.
Your dog will also love winter with us. He can play and run to his heart's content in our natural garden. Chasing snowballs is great fun for any animal, especially if you rarely get a lot of snow at home. Your furry friend can accompany you on snowshoe hikes and ski tours, if he's sufficiently athletic. Here you can find out more about your vacation with your dog.
